Ed Sheeran inspires new £12.5m music education in libraries scheme

The plan includes £12.5 million for library studios, a £15 million Arts Council England boost and support for more than 2,000 projects.

  • On Monday, the government launched 'Turn It Up: Our Plan for Music,' investing £45 million over three years to support more than 2,000 projects and at least 40,000 artists and music professionals.
  • Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy announced £12.5 million to transform libraries into 'music lending' spaces with recording booths and studios co-designed by the Sheeran Foundation, inspired by her visit to Ipswich-based Brighten the Corners.
  • Michael Dugher, former chief executive of UK Music, has been appointed as the government's first Music Champion to strengthen engagement between government and the music industry as a dedicated sector advocate.
  • Regulatory changes include longer, more secure licenses for venues, with minimum three-year contracts for new events and five-year contracts for existing ones, plus up to 20 Temporary Event Notices annually.
  • At least £10 million in dormant assets funding will support a creative mentoring scheme, giving care-experienced young people opportunities to explore creative disciplines through the National Lottery Community Fund.
