Colombia will resume its coal exports to Israel, the Colombian Minister of Commerce announced on Friday, August 21, 2026. This is a new step in the rapprochement between the two countries since the election of Aberlardo de la Espriella, the new far-right Colombian president who has been making numerous diplomatic and commercial gestures towards the Jewish state.
In Colombia, coal exports to Israel, which were halted during the Petro era citing attacks on Gaza as justification, are being restarted by the new right-wing government. The decision by the government, which took office on August 7th, comes while Israel's attacks on Gaza continue.
During the suspension Israel chose to import coal from South Africa and increase the use of natural gas in its thermal generation plants.
Prior to this suspension, Colombia was Israel's main supplier of coal with some $450 million (€342 million) in 2023.
