The Council of Ministers approved on Tuesday the declaration of areas affected by an emergency (which was previously known as a catastrophic zone) for the territories affected by forest fires since June. This qualification serves to accelerate the response of the Executive in the devastated areas through direct aid, tax exemptions and other measures for those affected not only by fires, but also by floods produced since June.
The Spanish government says to be "evidently one of the most environmental disasters in recent years" and considers that the impacts and events in question are the result of climate change.
The Méntrida and Navalmoralejo fires could be among those declared as areas affected by civil protection emergency, according to the Councillor for Sustainable Development
The government will approve in the Council of Ministers this Tuesday the declaration of "emergency areas affected by civil protection" to the territories suffering from forest fires, as well as give the green light to the creation of an inter-ministerial climate change commission, which will meet this morning at 09.00 a.m.
The Council of Ministers opens the way for victims to claim compensation. It also approves guidelines for communities to comply with annual plans for forest prevention and monitoring.
