Gov. Stitt Names Lindel Fields as New State Superintendent

Thursday, October 02, 2025, Governor Kevin Stitt appointed Lindel Fields, interim Oklahoma State Superintendent of Public Instruction, at a news conference at Eisenhower International School, Tulsa, following Ryan Walters' resignation.
Ryan Walters resigned after announcing last week on FOX News that he would become CEO of the Teacher Freedom Alliance, affiliated with the Freedom Foundation, starting October 1.
With more than 30 years in Oklahoma's CareerTech, Lindel Fields said he will serve the remaining 15 months of Walters' term as interim superintendent, focusing on reading, teacher recruitment, and career pathways.
The governor also formed a Turnaround Team, named Dan Hamlin as secretary of education and said new appointees will review agency contracts and programs.
Following the resignation, Attorney General Gentner Drummond requested an audit, citing Walters' documented mismanagement of tax dollars and misuse of emergency federal education funds.
