N.Y. Gov. Hochul Proposes New Online Safety Measures for Kids, Mental Health Training for Teens
- On Monday, Gov. Kathy Hochul unveiled State of the State proposals at Hamburg High School, Hamburg, Western New York, urging increased social media protections for children.
- Building on past work, Gov. Kathy Hochul has focused in recent years on internet-technology legislation, including the SAFE for Kids Act and smartphone restrictions, ahead of her full agenda on Jan. 13.
- The package would require platforms to default to highest privacy for users under 18, disable certain AI chatbot features for kids, and mandate parental approval for new connections for children under 13.
- Hochul said `I will not rest until I know our students are safe, healthy and happy, because we still have lurking in the shadows of the internet, these predators, these criminals,` announcing her plan to expand Teen Mental Health First Aid to all 10th graders, reaching over 180,000 students annually.
- The proposals aim to establish a nation-leading standard by building on bills from Sen. Andrew Gounardes and Assemblymember Nily Rozic, praised by the National Council for Mental Wellbeing while lawsuits allege online platforms failed to protect children.
