Gov. Greg Abbott asks Texas Supreme Court to expel House Democratic leader who left state
TEXAS, AUG 6 – Governor Abbott seeks removal of Rep. Gene Wu for abandoning office by fleeing state to block GOP redistricting, alleging bribery and obstructing legislative process during special session.
- On Aug. 5, Governor Greg Abbott filed an emergency petition with the Texas Supreme Court to remove Rep. Gene Wu from office after lawmakers fled to block redistricting, Abbott argued.
- Over 50 Texas House Democrats fled to Illinois, New York and Massachusetts Aug. 3 to block a quorum for redistricting votes, Abbott argued.
- Ninety-Four House lawmakers are present on Aug. 5, short of the 100-person quorum, with rules allowing a $500 daily fine and DPS working to locate absentees.
- The Texas Supreme Court ordered Wu to respond by Friday, and Paxton warned that absentees past that deadline risk forfeiting their seats.
- A ruling could set a quorum-breaking precedent affecting efforts to redraw 38 congressional districts and flip five Democratic-held U.S. House seats in next year’s midterm elections.
