Gov. Abbott's disaster declaration for winter weather now includes several Houston-area counties

The declaration covers 219 counties, activating over 10,900 responders and nearly 5,000 vehicles to address life-threatening cold and ice statewide, officials said.

  • On Sunday, Gov. Greg Abbott expanded the state's disaster declaration to include 85 additional counties, bringing the total to 219 counties as "communities across the state have been impacted by this weekend's winter weather," Abbott said.
  • To support local response, the declaration was expanded to facilitate access to state and federal assistance, with Texas Division of Emergency Management activating resources and raising State Operations Center readiness to Level II.
  • More than 10,900 state responders and over 4,900 vehicles and pieces of equipment were deployed, and officials opened more than 375 warming centers across Texas.
  • The declaration unlocks immediate state and federal assistance including funding and allows pre-positioning of Texas National Guard assets while DPS issued a five-day waiver for essential goods transport.
  • Amid grid monitoring, ERCOT said outages are likely local and not gridwide, while the U.S. Department of Energy authorized backup generators as a majority in East Texas remain impacted.
