Esther González and Gotham FC Agree to Part Ways so She Can Attend to Personal Matters
The Spanish forward leaves as Gotham’s leading scorer with 30 regular-season goals, and the club says she is stepping away for personal matters.
On Monday, July 27, 2026, Gotham and Esther González mutually terminated her contract as the Spanish forward will 'temporarily step away from soccer' to attend to personal matters in Spain.
Since joining in 2023, González helped the club capture two NWSL Championship titles and the Concacaf Champions Cup, becoming the team's all-time leading scorer with 30 regular-season goals.
Nine days after scoring a late brace to lead a 3-2 win, González missed Friday's 2-2 draw with the Portland Thorns due to an excused absence.
Gotham president of soccer operations Yael Averbuch West said, 'We wish Esther and her family all the best,' thanking the forward for her professional contributions and leadership.
In her departing statement, González reflected, 'This journey has surpassed every expectation,' and said she will 'carry so many incredible memories' from her time in New Jersey with Gotham.
