GOP urges Democrat governor to deploy National Guard to Charlotte as crime surges
Republican lawmakers cite a 200% rise in Uptown Charlotte murders and police staffing shortages as reasons for requesting National Guard deployment to address local violence.
- On Wednesday, Nov. 5, Rep. Mark Harris led a letter with Reps. Chuck Edwards and Pat Harrigan urging Gov. Josh Stein, North Carolina governor, to deploy the National Guard to Charlotte as an emergency stabilizing measure.
- On Oct. 2 the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Fraternal Order of Police formally requested National Guard assistance, citing the August fatal stabbing of 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska and recent homicide clusters.
- The letter cites a 200% increase in the Uptown Charlotte murder rate, with three murders from Jan. 1 to Oct. 5, 2024, versus nine in the same period in 2025, while CMPD reports an 8% citywide crime drop and 20% decline in violent offenses during the third quarter.
- A spokesperson for Stein said local, well-trained law enforcement are best equipped to keep neighborhoods safe, as Gov. Josh Stein’s office has no plans to deploy the National Guard; Mayor Lyles, Rep. Alma Adams and Malcolm Graham called the request unnecessary.
- Citing prior deployments in Washington, D.C. and Memphis, the letter credited the Guard with crime reductions, including twelve days without a homicide, and noted Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee’s partnership resulted in 850 arrests, while deployments cost about $1 million a day.
