GOP gubernatorial candidates take debate stage at DECC
Candidates focused on fraud, health care and education as about 3,000 delegates prepared to endorse the party’s nominee.
- On Thursday, May 28, six GOP gubernatorial hopefuls—including House Speaker Lisa Demuth, MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell, and Navy Lieutenant Commander Phil Parrish—debated platforms before a standing-room-only crowd at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center.
- Hosted by Americans for Prosperity-Minnesota, the forum precedes the Republican Party state convention beginning Friday, May 29, at the DECC, where approximately 3,000 delegates will gather to endorse candidates for five offices.
- Candidates unanimously opposed Obamacare, while Lindell suggested Minnesota should model its education system after Mississippi, which improved its ranking from last in the nation to 16th.
- When asked if they would abide by the party delegates' nomination, only three candidates raised their hands: "Nomination this weekend, only three raised their hands in confirmation: Knight, Demuth and Qualls."
- While all six aspirants seek an endorsement from President Donald Trump, the candidates remain divided on policy approaches, such as the necessity of an inspector general to combat state-level fraud.
