GOP Bill Seeks to Rename Kennedy Center for Trump
WASHINGTON, D.C., JUL 29 – The GOP bill seeks to rename the Kennedy Center after Trump amid controversy and a 50% drop in ticket sales, as Republicans push multiple Trump-related cultural changes.
- This past week, Rep. Bob Onder, R-Mo., introduced the Make Entertainment Great Again Act to rename the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts as the Donald J. Trump Center for the Performing Arts.
- Earlier this month, House Republicans on the Appropriations Committee approved an amendment to rename the Kennedy Center’s Opera House, while historians say the effort to honor Trump is almost unprecedented.
- Under current law, the U.S. code governing the Kennedy Center and former board members say no theaters beyond the Eisenhower Theater can be renamed without new legislation.
- Critics also say Democrats called the proposal a partisan stunt and Jack Schlossberg, JFK's grandson, criticized it last week.
