Google Brings AirDrop-Style Tap to Share to Android Users, Starting with Pixels

The update lets Android users exchange contact cards, photos and videos with a tap, while Pixel 11 moves its NFC antenna for easier use.

  • On Wednesday, Google launched Tap to Share via Quick Share, enabling instant contact and file transfers between Android devices with a physical tap. The feature rolls out today to Pixel 6 and newer phones.
  • To facilitate this gesture, Google engineered a crucial hardware change on the Google Pixel 11 series by repositioning the NFC chip to the top, enabling an Apple-like intuitive tap to initiate device handshake.
  • Users can share photos, videos, or contact cards by selecting media in the Share Sheet and tapping devices together, which establishes a direct connection for instant, two-way information exchange between compatible Android devices.
  • Google plans to expand Tap to Share to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8, Fold 8 Ultra, and Flip 8 soon, bringing Android closer to Apple's NFC-powered NameDrop feature launched in iOS 17.
  • The feature will help propagate Quick Share for file transfers, as many Android users remain unaware of the tool. Google intends to expand support across more devices by year-end.
