Google Is Giving You More Control over What Shows up in Your Feed

Google is adding tools that let readers choose preferred publishers and tell Discover what topics to surface, with 345,000 sources already selected in May.

  • On Thursday, Google announced three personalization upgrades across Search, Discover, and Google News, giving users more control over content recommendations.
  • These tools aim to mitigate declining referral traffic caused by AI Overviews, with the company introducing an embeddable 'Preferred Sources' button for online publishers.
  • "When readers click this button, it adds the site as a Preferred Source on Google and immediately directs them back to where they left off on the publisher's page," Google explains.
  • A new Gemini-powered chat interface will allow users to describe preferences for their Discover feed, with the AI set to remember and refine content on the fly.
  • Additionally, Google News on Android now allows users to curate daily audio briefings by topic, extending personalization to audio formats for easier exploration.
