Google Sues Chinese Cybercrime Network that Used Gemini to Automate Scams
Google says the network used Gemini to create 9,000 fake websites and send 2.5 million scam texts in a two-week span.
- On Friday, Google filed a lawsuit against China-based cybercrime network Outsider Enterprise, which allegedly used Gemini to impersonate Google, YouTube, the Postal Service, and E-ZPass.
- During a two-week period, the network deployed 9,000 fake websites, 1 million fraudulent URLs, and 2.5 million texts to Android users, financially scamming "hundreds of thousands of victims."
- Coordinating with the FBI, T-Mobile, and Verizon, Google is actively blocking scam texts and uses AI-powered tools to intercept more than 10 billion scam messages a month.
- "This is our first coordinated effort and lawsuit and that speaks to the breadth of impact that this particular scam has," Google's general counsel DeLaine Prado told The New York Times.
- Google is advocating for updated laws including the National Strategy for Combatting Scams Act and the Strategic Task Force on Scam Prevention Act to address how AI technology can "supercharge" threats.
