Iowa's Nuclear Power Plant to Reopen in Partnership with Google

The Duane Arnold Energy Center will provide 615 MW of carbon-free power under a 25-year contract to support Google’s AI data centers and create about 400 jobs, officials said.

  • On Monday, Google and NextEra Energy announced they will restart the Duane Arnold Energy Center near Palo, Iowa, with a 25-year agreement for Google to buy power from the 615-megawatt plant to supply its Cedar Rapids AI data center by early 2029, pending approval.
  • AI-Driven demand is prompting Google and other tech giants to secure nuclear power, as U.S. electricity demand is on track to grow in the coming years, industry observers say.
  • Central Iowa Power Cooperative agreed to buy surplus energy and one minority owner will purchase a portion on the same terms, while NextEra spokesman Bill Orlove said, `Google will be paying for getting Duane Arnold back online.`
  • NextEra Energy plans to hold its first licensing class early next year, estimates 1,600 construction jobs, and says `This will not be impacting the residential or business customers of any Iowa utility.`
  • This deal positions Google to expand its clean-energy supply for AI infrastructure by securing nearly 3 gigawatts of power from NextEra Energy and exploring new U.S. nuclear generation.
