Google Maps introduces its biggest driving updates yet
- Today, Google introduced two driving features, Ask Gemini and Immersive Navigation, calling it the 'biggest update in over a decade' as Immersive Navigation begins rolling out in the US.
- Google built the features to improve navigation safety by using Gemini, Google's AI models for spatial understanding to analyze Street View imagery and aerial photos.
- Visually, Immersive Navigation replaces the flat map with a vivid 3D driving view showing buildings, overpasses and terrain, adding smart zooms, transparent buildings and natural-sounding voice guidance like 'Go past this exit and take the next one for Illinois 43 South.'
- Drivers will see alternate routes and tradeoff explanations as disruptions are reported by the community providing over 10 million contributions daily, and previews with Street View are available.
- Both features will roll out over the next two weeks on iOS and Android devices, CarPlay, Android Auto, and cars with Google built in, with availability expanding over the coming months.
