Google Invests $1.5B to Expand Alabama Data Center Powered by TVA | Chattanooga Times Free Press
Google will cover power and infrastructure costs and plans to use up to 50 megawatts of advanced nuclear energy for the expansion.
On Monday, Google announced a $1.5 billion investment to expand its data center in Jackson County, Alabama, aiming to address rising demand for digital services.
The facility sits on the site of the former TVA Widows Creek Fossil Plant, which closed in 2015; Google has maintained operations there since 2018 by repurposing existing infrastructure.
Google pledged to cover 100% of electricity and infrastructure costs under the White House Ratepayer Protection Pledge, while partnering with Kairos Power to eventually transition to nuclear energy.
Alongside the expansion, Google announced a $2 million Energy Impact Fund with TVA and CAANEAL for local energy programs, plus $550,000 for STEM kits for local students.
Construction will span 2026 and 2027, employing more than 1,000 contract workers, as Google works to transition the facility to nuclear power in the coming years.
