Dane County Humane Society Welcoming Hundreds of Dogs From Ridglan Farms
The shelter is examining and vaccinating former research beagles as it prepares the dogs for rehoming.
On Monday and Tuesday, 150 beagles from Ridglan Farms arrived each day at the Dane County Humane Society , with 500 total expected this week. Staff and volunteers helped transport the dogs from the research facility to the barn where many roamed freely for the first time.
The dogs are among 1,500 beagles removed last month from Ridglan Farms, a Wisconsin research facility accused of performing procedures constituting animal mistreatment. The company denied the allegations but agreed to sell the dogs to rescue organizations.
Upon arrival, each dog receives examination by veterinary staff and necessary vaccinations. Certified Veterinarian Technician Roxanne Sanchez assists with care while some beagles require dental work, as volunteer Wendy Lansdon noted: "They all need dentals, all their teeth are really bad."
Dogs like Daffy are experiencing basic comforts for the first time, walking on grass and playing with toys. However, rescuers are treating severe separation anxiety and behavioral challenges, with some dogs struggling to adjust to life outside research crates.
More than 1,500 people have expressed interest in fostering or adopting the beagles through DCHS's website, according to Amy Good, the director of development and marketing. The organization aims to place all rescued dogs in permanent homes once they're ready.
