Here's How Welsh Schools Will Approach the Incoming Social Media Ban for Under 16s
A workforce survey found 82% backed statutory restrictions, and the guidance will allow medical or other essential exemptions.
On Tuesday, Cabinet Secretary for Education and Welsh Language Anna Brychan announced new national statutory guidance to restrict mobile phone use in schools across Wales, aiming to reduce distractions and improve learning environments.
While most schools already maintain individual phone policies, a government-commissioned workforce survey revealed inconsistent enforcement, with 82% of respondents favoring statutory restrictions to provide greater national consistency.
Headteachers are strongly encouraged to implement robust restrictions, including full site-wide bans, though the government confirmed exceptions will be made for pupils requiring mobile phones for medical or other essential reasons.
Brychan intends to begin consultations on the rules with schools and councils in September, evaluating the guidance throughout the academic year with options to further strengthen requirements if necessary.
This initiative coincides with the UK Government's separate plan to restrict social media access for those under 16, a strategy the Welsh Government is currently assessing for its potential impact on learners.
