Going uptown in the ‘50s was an occasion

Summary by Countyweeklynews
When I was a child growing up on The Commons (Hill Street), in the ’50s, “going uptown” was an occasion. These excursions involved forethought and preparation and took place approximately once a week. My mother would announce these outings, usually a day in advance, and prepare a list of errands which always included at stop at my Aunt Mary’s grocery store.
