'Goalkeeper union' strong as Crépeau, St. Clair vie to be Canada's No. 1 at World Cup
Jesse Marsch will give Dayne St. Clair and Maxime Crépeau 45 minutes each Monday as Canada weighs its World Cup starter.
On Monday in Edmonton, Canada head coach Jesse Marsch will split 45 minutes of playing time between goalkeepers Dayne St. Clair and Maxime Crépeau during a friendly match against Uzbekistan.
St. Clair earned Major League Soccer goalkeeper of the year honors last season, while 32-year-old Crépeau seeks redemption after a horrific injury forced him to miss the 2022 World Cup roster.
Both athletes maintain a supportive relationship despite intense competition for the single starting spot, with St. Clair noting that "we're going to be judged as a team" rather than as individuals.
Determining a starter will be difficult, Marsch admitted, stating he will be "tormented by telling one of them they're not the goalkeeper for the World Cup."
The coaching staff will evaluate performance after the match to finalize the roster, as the team prepares for the upcoming World Cup tournament on home soil this June.
