This weekend, Brno will commemorate the 380th anniversary of the city's famous defense against the besieging Swedes. The defense lasted 112 long days, and according to historical sources, 250 people died in the severely tested metropolis, while the enemy lost eight thousand men. Visitors will also see these facts in a completely new exhibition, which will be premiered in the Church of St. James this weekend.
August 15th marks the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in the liturgical calendar. 380 years ago, on Tuesday, August 15th, 1645, almost all the people of Brno prayed to this most important Christian saint. Their city had been under siege by the Swedish army for three and a half months, and it was on this day that the question of whether and how it would all end was decided.
