GMC's New Mid-Size Hummer X Pickup and SUV Concepts Aim Directly at the Bronco and the Wrangler
The concepts are testbeds for sustainable construction and off-road hardware, and GM says they will not go into production.
Today, General Motors officially opened its new 148,000-square-foot advanced design studio in Pasadena, California, debuting two mid-size electric concept vehicles: the Hummer X SUV and Hummer X pickup.
Company executives confirmed the Hummer X concepts are "not intended for production," serving instead as a testbed for new manufacturing methods like "Flex Fab," an on-demand metal production process similar to 3D printing.
Designed for the "builder maker," the Hummer X features removable fender flares, Multimatic shocks, and a scout drone controlled via the "Hummer Hub" app to "redefine what a mid-size EV can do off-road."
Modular components allow owners to swap interior parts made from recycled materials, while the Hummer X SUV measures 8.5 inches shorter than the current production Hummer EV SUV.
Although General Motors claims these concepts "imagine a future where Hummer takes Bronco, Wrangler, and Ranger head-on," the automaker confirmed they are strictly for exploring design territories rather than immediate commercial release.
The pair of Hummer X concepts were created to showcase the capabilities of GM's new design studio in Pasadena. Off-road capability is only part of the story, more important is testing new manufacturing and design solutions.
