Gmail's new Gemini AI features can be turned off, but there's a catch
Gemini AI tools are enabled by default for over 3 billion Gmail users with opt-out disabling features like autocorrect, spell check, and email sorting, Google said.
- On Thursday, Gmail Vice President of Product Blake Barnes announced Google turned on Gemini AI features by default in Gmail, used by 3 billion people, in a blog post.
- Since May 2024, AI Overviews in Search have appeared atop Google Search and are now added to Gmail, letting users type questions into the Gmail search bar to locate emails.
- To opt out, Gmail users must uncheck the 'Turn on smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet' box and turn off the Google Workspace smart features sliders in Settings → General → Smart Features.
- Opting out of Gemini features disables autocorrect, spell check, desktop notifications, package tracking, and email categories Primary, Promotions and Social, forcing users to choose between AI and these tools.
- The company also introduced AI writing and reply features plus an 'AI Inbox' personalized briefing, with an editor's note about a 2024 video signaling continuity.
