GM, LG Energy Solutions to Make Cheaper EV Batteries at Tennessee Site
SPRING HILL, TENNESSEE, JUL 14 – GM and LG Energy Solution will retrofit their Spring Hill plant to produce lithium iron phosphate batteries by late 2027, aiming to reduce EV costs as federal incentives end, creating several hundred jobs.
- On July 14, 2025, Ultium Cells LLC will upgrade its Spring Hill, Tennessee plant, scaling LFP cell output, building on a $2.3-billion 2021 investment.
- Amid sluggish EV demand, Mary Barra said, GM remains committed to EVs as industry shifts toward low-cost LFP batteries.
- In contrast to NMC chemistry, LFP batteries offer lower cost and high safety, powering over 80% of EVs in China.
- GM said the LFP-powered Silverado EV will deliver about 350 miles of range while cutting $6,000 in battery costs, and that both the next-generation Bolt EV and a Silverado EV trim will use LFP cells.
- By late 2027, Ultium said commercial LFP production will start after assembly line conversion later this year, boosting U.S. battery capacity.
