GM to end electric van production at CAMI plant in Ingersoll, Ont.

GM will provide six months' salary and benefits to about 1,200 CAMI plant workers as it ends BrightDrop electric van production due to slow commercial EV market growth.

  • On Oct. 21, 2025, General Motors confirmed it is ending BrightDrop production at the CAMI Assembly plant in Ingersoll, and the company said no BrightDrop vehicles will be made elsewhere.
  • Production paused earlier this year after GM cited slowing demand in the commercial electric-vehicle sector, which developed more slowly than expected due to weaker demand, regulatory changes and lost U.S. tax credits.
  • The Ingersoll plant had been operating below capacity since late 2022 after a $1-billion retooling investment; Kristian Aquilina said the production end reflects market demand, not workforce skill.
  • GM said hourly employees will receive six months' salary while the company works with Unifor Local 88 and governments; about 1,200 unionized workers were employed before suspension earlier this year.
  • Amid Stellantis's recent U.S. investment moves, federal and Ontario governments face pressure to secure a new mandate for CAMI as GM highlights ongoing Oshawa and St. Catharines production and a $600-million battery-materials facility in Becancour, Quebec.
