GM's New LMR Battery Could Change the Game: Is It Ready to Lead?

  • General Motors announced plans to commercialize lithium manganese-rich battery cells for full-size electric trucks and SUVs by 2028.
  • GM developed this LMR technology jointly with LG Energy Solution to reduce costly nickel and cobalt by substituting more affordable manganese.
  • LMR cells provide a energy density that is one-third greater than that of lithium iron phosphate batteries, targeting a driving range exceeding 400 miles and helping to reduce the overall cost of battery packs.
  • GM expects to start pre-production in late 2027 at its Battery Cell Development Center and LG’s facility, with mass production planned at Ultium Cells plants in 2028.
  • While GM could lead the LMR battery market and improve EV affordability, uncertainty remains whether the technology will meet its performance and cost goals.
