- Meeting these mandates would require an additional 36 million hectares, an area roughly the size of Germany, according to London-based Chatham House and the Forest Stewardship Council co-authors.
- "Production of feedstocks for first-generation biofuels tends to have net negative consequences," the authors said, warning that demand may outpace environmental safeguards and land-use planning implementation.
- "Some policy responses may be trading off against increased food insecurity," they cautioned, noting that extreme weather could severely affect food prices amid rising demand.
