Glangwili Hospital Ward Closes After Rare Crusted Scabies Outbreak
Contacts have been offered treatment and extra infection control measures are in place as the health board monitors the outbreak.
Steffan Ward at Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen, Wales, closed following an outbreak of scabies, a Victorian-era illness. Hywel Dda initiated the closure to manage the situation in line with established infection prevention and control procedures.
The NHS explains that scabies is an itchy rash caused by mites, spreading through prolonged skin-to-skin contact. While cases are rising, the condition cannot be contracted from pets, and anyone can get it.
BBC Wales reported the health board implemented "enhanced monitoring, treatment of identified contacts and ongoing support from specialist teams." Hywel Dda confirmed contacts, including those without symptoms, have been offered treatment.
People with a weakened immune system can contract a rare and very contagious type called crusted scabies, causing a crusted, flaky rash on the elbows, knees, hands, and feet.
Adults and children aged 5 years or over may return to work or school immediately after beginning treatment. However, it is essential to avoid close contact with others for the initial 24 hours.
