Girlguiding Unveils First Major Uniform Redesign Since 1990
The new range includes 30 garments and 15 accessories, and a survey of 2,000 girls found 93% prefer choosing how to style themselves.
Girlguiding chief executive Felicity Oswald launched the charity's first major uniform redesign in more than 30 years on Monday. The new range aims to "foster a true sense of belonging" while offering modern, practical designs.
A survey of 2,000 girls aged six to 16 conducted in June found 93% feel most comfortable when choosing their own style. This finding directly informed the redesign's emphasis on personal expression and choice.
Created by HemmingwayDesign, the range comprises 30 garments and 15 accessories featuring secret pockets and convertible badge sashes. Members need only wear a top to be considered "in uniform," allowing them to pair items with their own clothes.
The redesign launches six weeks before a policy change takes effect, limiting membership to "girls and young women" following a 2025 Supreme Court ruling on biological sex. This timing marks a significant shift in the organisation's approach.
Oswald said girls in guiding are 30% more confident, and the uniform aims to further nurture that confidence. The organisation hopes to reach more members by 2030, building their confidence so they know they can do anything.
