Teen Girl Swept to Sea 'in a Blink' as She Posed for a Photo
A 15-year-old girl was swept out to sea in 12-foot waves, and her mother and a local man died trying to rescue her.
An inquest at Hull Coroner's Court concluded that 15-year-old Grace Keeling, her mother Sarah Keeling, 45, and bystander Mark Ratcliffe, 67, died after being swept into the North Sea at Withernsea on January 2.
The tragedy unfolded when a 12-foot wave swept Grace into the sea while she posed for photos with a friend; Sarah and Ratcliffe subsequently drowned attempting to rescue her.
Emergency services, including more than 100 police officers, launched a massive search operation; Grace's body was recovered 13 days later, trapped among giant boulders used for sea defences south of the incident.
Coroner Lorraine Harris recorded a narrative verdict describing Ratcliffe's actions as "selfless and brave," stating he "died in pursuit of trying to save others" during the treacherous conditions.
Jonathan Keeling, Grace's father, stated his life is "never going to be the same again," while tributes emphasized that Ratcliffe's grandchildren will grow up knowing their grandad was a "hero.
