- Kiko was being given access to an additional behind-the-scenes area on Thursday and became caught while exploring the space; staff immediately responded but he panicked and sustained fatal injuries.
- The zoo sent Kiko's body to the University of Guelph for a full postmortem, and its Health and Safety Services team opened an investigation after the giraffe's tragic death.
- With a third calf due in early 2026, Kiko's death is a direct blow to the zoo's breeding efforts, and the Toronto Zoo called the loss especially heartbreaking and pledged to share findings.
- Against broader conservation challenges, the zoo noted that Masai giraffes have fallen to just over 43,000 and were listed as endangered in 2018 by the IUCN.
