I recently wrote for LRT about theoretically failed states and the danger of state collapse in today's Iran. States, like empires, usually do not collapse immediately. The first signs of collapse are visible when the statements of the ruling institutions are no longer coordinated, when different leaders increasingly make decisions that contradict each other.
