Gilbert Rozon, Just for Laughs founder, ordered to pay eight of nine accusers $880K

Justice Chantal Tremblay awarded damages to eight women after finding proven assaults and misconduct, while rejecting Gilbert Rozon’s defamation counterclaims.

  • On Tuesday, Quebec Superior Court Justice Chantal Tremblay ordered Just for Laughs founder Gilbert Rozon to pay more than $880,000 to eight of nine women who sued him for sexual assault and misconduct.
  • The civil trial began in December 2024 following a 2020 Quebec Court of Appeal ruling that converted a class-action lawsuit into individual suits; plaintiffs initially sought nearly $14 million for incidents occurring between 1980 and 2004.
  • Rejecting Rozon's four defamation counterclaims, each seeking $275,000, Tremblay ordered him to pay plaintiffs' legal costs and awarded Danie Frenette more than $155,000 and Annick Charrette $95,000.
  • In a statement, law firm Trudel Johnston and Lespérance said the decision proves the justice system can respond to sexual violence, stating, "This victory also belongs to all survivors of sexual assault."
  • Tremblay wrote that the judgment aims to bring the trial to a close, reaffirming that attacks on personal integrity require a "legal response proportionate to the extent of the harm suffered.
