Ghana Condemns Killing of Citizen in South Africa, Demands Justice
Ghana says the 40-year-old father of three was killed at his Khayelitsha tailoring shop, and 500,000 deportations underscore migration tensions, officials said.
A 40-year-old Ghanaian, Bashiru Isak, was shot dead this week during anti-immigrant protests at his tailoring business in Khayelitsha, Cape Town. Isak, a married father of three, had lived in South Africa for 20 years.
Ghana condemned the killing, demanding an expedited investigation and arrests, as foreign affairs minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa urged the African Union to address the rising tide of xenophobia.
International relations minister Ronald Lamola reiterated a commitment to upholding human rights last month, while the Border Management Authority has deported 500,000 people since April 2023.
South Africa is calling for a regional system of refugee protection where 'compassion is matched by administrative capacity,' ensuring migration is managed as a Pan-African issue.
To guarantee legal, merit-based entry, The Government seeks 'intelligent population register' compliance while emphasizing that community concerns about illegal migration should not breed prejudice.
