What Makes Greenland so Valuable — and Why President Trump Is Interested
Trump says Greenland is vital to U.S. national security as 85% of Greenlanders oppose joining the United States, a 2025 poll found.
President Donald Trump renewed his push for United States control of Greenland, asserting the territory is "essential for the Golden Dome missile shield" and stating, "That should be controlled by the United States, not by Denmark."
Trump told reporters that "Greenland is covered with Russian and Chinese ships all over the place," citing national security as justification for his interest in the Danish territory since at least 2019.
A 2025 poll found that 85% of Greenlandic people oppose joining the United States, while Greenland spans 836,300 square miles, larger than Texas, California, Montana, New Mexico, and Arizona combined.
Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen rejected the proposal, stating, "Greenland is of course not for sale," as the territory operates as a self-governing body within the Kingdom of Denmark.
Since 1867, the United States has attempted to control Greenland at least four times; currently, the U.S. Space Force operates the Pituffik Space Base, the only American military facility remaining on the island.
