Air Chief Marshal Sir Richard Knighton warns UK must boost reserves, skills, and defence industries to counter Russia's 1.1 million-strong military and rising hybrid threats.
- On Monday, Air Chief Marshal Sir Richard Knighton warned at the Royal United Services Institute of a growing Russian threat and urged more people to be ready to fight including regular forces, reserves and cadets.
- Russia has rapidly expanded its military, becoming a battle-hardened force of more than 1.1 million that consumes over seven per cent of GDP and 40 per cent of government spending while developing destabilising weapons.
- Knighton warned daily cyber attacks from Russia include sabotage efforts, damage to undersea cables, spy ships, and a seven-day satellite loss could cost the UK an estimated 7.64bn, he said.
- The defence chief said the UK must build defence industrial capacity, grow skills, and increase societal resilience, with £50m for Defence Technical Excellence Colleges and defence spending pledged to rise to 2.5% of GDP by 2027 and 3.5% by 2035.
- Western officials reported threats against UK forces have risen in the past year, as Knighton warned most lack direct armed-forces experience, with this month marking 65 years since national service ended.
