German Inflation Accelerates on Higher Energy Prices

Energy inflation climbed to 10.5%, and the German government now expects inflation to reach 2.7% this year.

  • On Monday, Aug 31, 2026, German consumer prices rose to 2.9% year-on-year, up from 2.8% in the previous month, preliminary data from the statistics office in BERLIN showed.
  • Higher energy prices, fueled by the conflict in Iran, drove Energy inflation to 10.5% in August, while Education-related expenses also contributed at the start of the new school year.
  • While the 2.9% increase proved lower than the 3.1% forecast by Analysts polled by Reuters, regional pressures remain elevated; European inflation is expected to reach 3.3% in August.
  • European Central Bank policymakers are expected to raise interest rates at their next meeting on Sept 10 to contain inflation pressures, as oil and gas price increases stoke costs across the region.
  • Slovenian Governing Council member Primoz Dolenc noted last week that arguments "are there" for a September move, while the European economy faces a deposit rate of 2.25% that officials view as neutral.
