Germany tries three over plot to overthrow government
Prosecutors say the men backed a plot to disable the power grid and install ministers in a revived Kingdom of Prussia.
- On Wednesday, three men named Achim M., Joachim K., and Rainer S. went on trial in Munich for supporting the "United Patriots" group, accused of backing coup plans to overthrow the German government.
- The accused are part of the Reichsbuerger scene, which rejects Germany's modern republic. According to prosecutors, the men were earmarked to serve as government ministers in a re-established "Kingdom of Prussia" after Germany's current republic had been overthrown.
- Their plan included a sabotage attack to disable the power grid in an operation dubbed "Silent Night," aiming to seize power amid the ensuing chaos, the court said.
- Four members of the "United Patriots" were jailed in March 2025 for planning civil war-like conditions in Germany, with two accomplices sentenced in April 2025 for their roles in the plot.
- The federal domestic intelligence agency reported that the Reichsbuerger scene grew to around 26,000 members in 2024, up from around 25,000 in 2023, and is viewed as a growing security threat.
