Germany sees anti-Pride events and restricts rainbow flags ahead of LGBTQ+ parties
BERLIN, GERMANY, JUL 25 – Berlin's transport authority painted the Bundestag subway station in rainbow colors after the federal parliament banned Pride flags, amid a rise in queerphobic hate crimes, officials said.
- On Saturday, Berlin's Christopher Street Day parade begins without a rainbow flag over the Reichstag, breaking the tradition introduced in 2022.
- Last month, Julia Klöckner, Bundestag President, barred the flag through Pride month, ordered parliamentary staff to remove rainbow decorations from offices.
- BVG decorated the Bundestag U-Bahn station in rainbow colours, `We are happy to help you fly the flag,` BVG said.
- Seventeen extreme-right anti-Pride demonstrations this year, the Center for Monitoring, Analysis and Strategy reported, raising safety concerns for Pride attendees.
- Despite threats, Berlin's Nollendorfplatz hosts its own Pride, while over 200 Pride events occur across Germany this year.
