HUERTGENWALD, Germany — A wildfire in western Germany that forced the evacuation of thousands of people Friday stabilized, local authorities said Saturday, though residents were still barred from returning home.
The 2,000 residents of the German village of Gey, where a wildfire is raging nearby, are allowed to return home. They were evacuated on Friday morning because the fire came dangerously close to the village. Eventually, the flames approached the houses to within about 150 meters.
