BOGOTA (AP) — Former Colombian Vice President Germán Vargas Lleras, an influential politician who served as a senator, minister, and leader of the Radical Change party, died Friday, his political party confirmed. He was 64.

Germán Vargas Lleras, the powerful vice president of Juan Manuel Santos who led an ambitious program of infrastructure and housing construction in Colombia, a hard-handed politician who climbed all the steps of public service until he unsuccessfully sought the Presidency of the Republic, has passed away at age 64. The former vice president had for years had a cancer of which he never revealed more details.
The political leader, born in Bogotá in 1962, held some of the most influential positions in the State and participated in multiple electoral and legislative processes throughout his public career.
