German aerospace company signs 10-year deal to use Nova Scotia space launch pad

Isar Aerospace will pay US$3.75 million per quarter and aims for 40 launches a year at the site by 2029.

  • On Tuesday, German firm Isar Aerospace signed a 10-year deal with Maritime Launch Services to build a dedicated launch complex in Canso, Nova Scotia, for its Spectrum rocket.
  • Canada currently relies on the United States to launch satellites, despite about 20 per cent of the Canadian economy—including banking and telecommunication systems—relying on space-based data.
  • Construction begins this year with orbital launches targeted for 2028, while Isar will pay Maritime Launch quarterly fees once the contract is fully underway.
  • Stephen Matier, CEO of Maritime Launch, said the deal "represents another important milestone in building Canada's sovereign launch capability" through reliable orbital services.
  • Plans call for up to 40 annual launches by 2029; Alexandre Dalloneau, Isar's vice-president, noted the company aims to resolve "consequential bottlenecks in defence and intelligence.
