Gerhard Richter's Mosaic-Like Doha Pavilion Will Open in November
The hexagonal structure was conceived by Gerhard Richter as a three-dimensional artwork and will display his Strip paintings, Mirrors and Strip Tower.
- Qatar Museums announced yesterday a permanent pavilion designed by 94-year-old artist Gerhard Richter, set to open on November 20, 2026, in MIA Park outside Doha's Museum of Islamic Art.
- Conceived after a 2013 trip to Doha, Richter designed the hexagonal pavilion as a "three-dimensional experience" of his Strip paintings, Mirrors, and Strip Tower, uniting thematic threads of his artistic practice.
- Selldorf Architects collaborated on the project, creating exterior designs based on Richter's 2011 book Patterns, which divides his 1990 canvas Abstract Painting into 8,192 strips.
- The inaugural Rubaiya Qatar contemporary art quadrennial opens on November 21, 2026, one day after the pavilion unveiling, running through April 2027 with focus on Eastern Hemisphere artists.
- Featuring around 60 artists, the quadrennial includes Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama, who will wrap the future Art Mill Museum site, emphasizing the exhibition's focus on non-Western Hemisphere creators.
