FULTON COUNTY, GEORGIA, JUL 24 – Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern merger talks could reshape North American railroads, creating the largest network and increasing competitive pressure, officials said.
- The Associated Press reported last week that Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern confirmed they are in advanced merger discussions on July 24.
- Two years ago, the STB approved the first major rail merger under its rules, with Patrick Fuchs, who joined in 2019, seen as a proponent of industry consolidation.
- Based on 2024 performance, a combined system would generate $36 billion in revenue, handle 15.3 million shipments, employ 52,023 staff, and operate 9,301 locomotives, but it must clear Surface Transportation Board 2001 rules requiring enhanced competition and public interest.
- Jim Vena said `If you stand still, you get left behind`, and BNSF and CSX declined to comment.
- Industry observers expect a first transcontinental merger to spark a second, but there’s no guarantee it would pass Washington’s Surface Transportation Board review.
