Georgia PSC Votes to Lower Georgia Power Utility Rates
Georgia Power cut its requests by $113 million, and the commission said customers will see bill reductions beginning in June.
- On Thursday, the Georgia Public Service Commission approved a rate reduction plan delivering annual savings of approximately $50 for typical residential customers, effective next month.
- The agreement reduces storm recovery costs tied to Hurricane Helene from $270 million to $109 million and cuts $13 million from fuel recovery estimates, extending amortization to 67 months.
- Commissioners Peter Hubbard and Alicia Johnson unsuccessfully moved to investigate coal plant decisions costing customers $152 million, but the commission voted 3-2 to reject these amendments.
- "This fuel cost agreement is entirely insufficient," said Michael Hawthorne, Campaign Organizing Strategist for the Sierra Club, while Patrick King II of the Natural Resources Defense Council said it "leaves major accountability issues unresolved."
- Data centers and large-load customers may shift fuel costs onto residential ratepayers through the utility's Real Time Pricing structure, though regulators have not yet confirmed how much industrial operations will contribute in future cases.
