George Russell Reveals a New 'Swing' and Style to Rediscover Pace in F1
Russell said he borrowed ideas from Kimi Antonelli and golf, then won the sprint race and qualified second for Mercedes.
On Saturday, Aug. 22, 2026, Mercedes driver George Russell won the sprint race at the Formula One Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort, Netherlands, marking his return to the front of the grid.
During the midseason break, Russell learned from teammate Kimi Antonelli's techniques and drew inspiration from golf, adopting a long-term approach rather than fixating on immediate results.
Russell said, "I don't even really feel in a fight," adopting a relaxed mindset focused on gaining rather than defending. He aims to build a "toolbox of experience" for future seasons.
While McLaren and Ferrari pursued rapid upgrade packages, Mercedes maintained performance through stable car design, unchanged since the Canadian Grand Prix in May.
Russell noted he is "really, really proud" of the experience he is building, viewing the midseason break as foundational for becoming stronger in years to come.
