'Genuine boost' for UK drivers as petrol prices fall to lowest level in 5 years
Petrol prices average 131.91p per litre, the lowest since mid-2021, but the Competition and Markets Authority reports rising retailer profit margins amid weak competition.
- At UK forecourts, drivers of petrol cars see average petrol prices dip to 131.91p per litre, the lowest since June 9, 2025, RAC says.
- The decline followed a fall in global oil prices, with Brent crude dipping below $60 per barrel, a level not seen since early 2021, feeding through to pump costs.
- Since early December, petrol prices have fallen by more than 5p per litre after a 2p December cut, saving £2.90 on a 55-litre family car fill, with a full tank costing £72.55.
- The Competition and Markets Authority found retail fuel retailers' profit margins rose and said January reductions could have been larger if savings were passed on, with overcharges of £900 million in 2022 and £1.6 billion in 2023.
- Despite lower pump prices, the CMA says retailer margins remain high, with diesel prices falling 3p per litre since early January to 140.97p, and a full tank costing £77.53.
