United Church of Christ Synod Denounces ICE Raids as 'Domestic Terrorism'
KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, JUL 14 – The United Church of Christ condemned religious violence in India and criticized U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids, with 627 delegates approving the resolution at their General Synod.
- On July 11, 2025, delegates at the United Church of Christ’s 35th biennial General Synod in Kansas City, Missouri, approved an emergency resolution by a 627–8–1 vote reaffirming the church’s commitment to justice, human rights and religious freedom.
- Since the Bharatiya Janata Party took power in 2014, escalating violence against religious minorities in India, driven by Hindu nationalist ideology under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, anti-conversion laws and inflammatory rhetoric, prompted the resolution's passage.
- The church labeled ICE operations as `domestic terrorism`, while Religious News Service reported they involved agents without uniforms, wearing masks or refusing to identify themselves.
- Synod delegates called on the US State Department to designate India as a `country of particular concern`, and urged divestment from private detention companies including CoreCivic, GEO Group and Management and Training Corp.
- Going forward, UCC and allied religious organizations are expected to continue advocacy for immigrant rights, including renewed calls for divestment from private detention firms and expanded support for affected families, while the broader impact on public policy, enforcement practices and church-state relations remains under close watch.
