General Motors spending $691 million on St. Catharines engine plant
The upgrade will make St. Catharines GM’s third North American plant to build the sixth-generation engine for full-size trucks and SUVs.
General Motors announced a $691 million investment in its St. Catharines Propulsion Plant to support production of sixth-generation V-8 engines for full-size trucks and SUVs.
The Ontario facility becomes the third North America site for V-8 engine production, joining existing manufacturing operations in Buffalo and Flint.
General Motors Canada President Jack Uppal confirmed the plant's role in core programs, while spokesperson Ariane Souza Pereira called it "a proof point of GM's commitment to Canada."
The investment follows operational challenges at other facilities, including the idling of the Ingersoll CAMI assembly plant last year and a shift reduction at Oshawa, Ont., affecting 500 workers.
While General Motors targets high demand for full-size trucks, McMaster University professor Greig Mordue noted the industry faces uncertainty from volatile EV demand and competition from Chinese automakers.
